Papri chaat is my all time favourite snack. Whenever my mum invites her friends around for tea, this is a must have on the table! It’s tangy, slightly sweet from the tamarind and the papri adds a wonderful crunch! Did I also mention that it’s healthy? (apart from the papri of course!) It’s fresh, quick, light and so satisfying.
Chaat is a common street food originating from Uttar Pradesh in Northern India, and is available across India and Pakistan. The taste and recipes vary from place to place – some people like adding potatoes, some add dahi vada (lentil dumplings) whereas some add curried chickpeas. Whichever one you have, it will always packs a punch!
In my recipe I am adding papri (or papdi as it’s sometimes spelt), which refers to a savoury wafer (kind of like a popadom). The ones that I used are also known as “namak parey” and you can get them in bigger supermarkets or most South Asian shops and bakeries.
Ingredients:
- Tin of chickpeas
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 small finely chopped onion
- 1 chopped tomato
- 4 teaspoons chaat masala
- 1 tsp red chilli flakes
- Salt to taste
- Drizzle of tamarind chutney (optional)
- Drizzle of green chilli and mint sauce (optional)
- Handful chopped coriander
- 4 tbsp yogurt
- Mix it all up!
- Sprinkle sev or Bombay mix on top and papdi/ papri (or poppadoms)
- Sprinkle pomegranate (optional) .
Method
- In a large bowl, mix together the drained chickpeas, chopped onions, chopped tomatos, chaat masala, lemon juice, chilli flakes, coriander and salt.
- Add 2 tablespoons of yogurt and mix.
- Serve onto a plate or bowl and drizzle the rest of the yogurt, tamarind chutney, green chilli and mint sauce, sev, papdi and pomegranates.
And that’s it, easy peasy!
Yum 😋
